"The Shack Too" is a comfortable, calming, classic Outer Banks vacation bungalow with a great location - in the center of it all, with a short walk or bicycle ride - we provide two - to the beach and the sound but still a peaceful and relaxing escape. You can even rent a golf cart and leave the car behind - Target, Wawa, Food Lion, Belk, Chips Wine and Beer, and Front Porch coffee shop are all within a few blocks. We provide a parking pass to the neighborhood's private parking areas -one just across the street from the beach access at the end of the street with a lifeguard (in season) and at the sound for viewing marvelous sunsets. This cozy beach bungalow is the ideal place to relax.

The open living and kitchen area feature original artwork on the walls, classic beadboard wood paneling and floors, and eclectic, vintage, and antique family furnishings are combined to make this a true beach "home away from home". The front porch is an outdoor extension of the living area with a seating group, dining table, and no outside access from the ground level - ideal for hanging out and catching the ocean breezes.

Not your cookie-cutter listing or typical beach box, this bungalow has unique original touches with a comfortable, vintage feel and is just the right size for a couple or even two couples, two or three friends traveling together, or a modest family. And we are dog friendly, so there is no need to leave your furry family members behind. Make your memories here and experience living the classic beach lifestyle at The Shack Too.

Things to Note:

This is an elevated bungalow and is not suitable for infants or toddlers.

This bungalow is a raised/on piling type bungalow with one flight of outside stairs to the main living level.

Double-size bunk beds sleep one, two, three, or four people comfortably with total head clearance for all. A constructed-in ladder is supplied for top bunk access.

Animals are welcome, but details about the family pets must be supplied and approved by the owners before the final booking. A $125.00 non-returnable Pet Fee will apply.

Guest access

You have access to the entire bungalow and yard, the downstairs laundry and storage, and the outside hot and cold water shower. The 5th street beach is a public beach with a Lifeguard in the season (Memorial Day to Labor Day), and a stoplight crosswalk to walk to the beach. Or, you can use the included pass for the private Wright Shores parking lot at the beach access. Wright Shores also has a private neighborhood Sound Front Access at the bayside end of 5th Street you may use.

Other things to note:

You will need a pass supplied by the home to use the Wright Shores beach parking lot. If you lose the pass there will be a $250 fee to replace the pass.

How to find the best Kill Devil Hills rental experience:

Finding the best value:

  • In the Kill Devil Hills area, The sooner your group can book a rental home, the better your selection will be. The best vacation homes are booked very early. Booking your rental six - twelve months before your vacation dates is recommended. Christmas, Thanksgiving and New Years Eve are excellent times to search for and reserve your vacation rental.
  • Summer is the most expensive season in Kill Devil Hills. Reserve your rental home in Spring or Fall to get the benefit of gorgeous weather while saving money and avoiding crowds. Many vacationers use this strategy to find larger homes within budget, or to book a beach front rental that would otherwise be unavailable during the Summer. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Kill Devil Hills vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday on the coast? Thanksgiving and Christmas are great times to gather with loved ones at the beach.
  • Active Duty and veterans of the US Armed forces may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property management company or host whether your group qualifies for a special rate.
  • Property managers frequently offer customers an option to add trip insurance. Trip insurance, which generally will cost you between 1% - 5% of the booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed days as a result of medical-related issues or weather, as well as ensuing additional evacuation charges, such as an unanticipated hotel overnight or additional gasoline expenses. Trip insurance might be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask your property manager for additional information.
  • Often, property management companies and vacation rental houses supply Kill Devil Hills area visitor guide magazines that include special deals, either offered independently by local companies, or by way of a partnership between the management company and the business itself. You can also find Kill Devil Hills area magazine and coupon books at local gas stations and shopping centers.

Planning and picking a perfect Kill Devil Hills rental home:

  • First and foremost, have your family choose dates and a spending budget.
  • Note the number bedrooms and what type of bedroom configuration your family requires. Pet Friendly~Walk to the Beach or Sound~Bikes~Vintage and Original has 2 bedrooms and 1 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our rental home search.
  • Precise information regarding bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is generally accessible online. Otherwise, reach out to the property owner before reserving the vacation property. Note that most property listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which often includes pull-out couches. You will need to determine which bed configuration is right for your trip.
  • If your family is bringing pets, filter your search for a pet-friendly vacation rental. Make sure to ask for information on breed, weight, and type requirements. Some hosts require additional pet deposits and fees.
  • Are you visiting for a single event? If so, use a map search to browse nearby rentals.
  • Appropriate accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for the less-mobile. .

Know before you go:

  • Get the owner's contact number and check in/check out procedures for your rental home. We recommend storing the host's contact information in your smartphone.
  • Ask questions. You may need instructions for a garage door opener, intercom or coffee maker. Contact your owner. They are there to help! A brief telephone call can prevent quite a few difficulties.
  • Lock your rental while you're out. Protect your property!
  • Document any damages to the property at check in, and immediately contact the property manager. We especially recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain time stamps that are valuable if a dispute arises.
  • Be a good neighbor. Often times, surrounding homes are occupied by local residents. Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking rules reduces conflict and allows everyone to enjoy their day.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Local residents can frequently help. Who better to ask where to find the best bike paths, have a great night out, or the best spots for bird watching?
  • Don't leave anything behind! Just before you drive away, walk through the property to reconfirm you've collected all of your things. Re-check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden treasure. Clean out the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Inspect the rental one final time and look for any damage. We advise walking through with the property manager whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the property manager isn't available, ensure that you take photos and video of the rental to record its condition.
  • Did your group have a terrific time? Most rental home management companies make it easy for clients to provide comments. If your property and/or property management company was great, they will likely appreciate your kind words. If anything was amiss and they failed to address it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make a note as part of your feedback.
