Strategies to get the optimal Kill Devil Hills vacation rental experience:
How to get the best rental value:
- Reserve your rental as early as possible. Rental schedules generally become available twelve months in advance (or in September just after Summertime ends). Many families reserve their Summer vacations during Winter holiday get-togethers. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
- Summer time is high season in the Kill Devil Hills area. Booking in the Fall or Spring is a good way to save money on your vacation. Rental rates are lower, and you'll find a larger selection of acceptable homes. Many vacationers use this strategy to find larger homes within budget, or to reserve a beach front rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during the high season. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Kill Devil Hills vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation near the ocean? Thanksgiving and Christmas are great times to gather with loved ones at the beach.
- Active Duty and veterans of the US Armed forces may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property manager or host if your group qualifies for a discount.
- Property management companies often offer customers an option to purchase trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which usually will cost you between 1% - 5% of the stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed days as a result of personal medical-related issues or weather disasters, as well as evacuation costs, such as an unexpected hotel overnight or extra gas expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a bank account-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for additional information.
- Look for your local Kill Devil Hills area magazine when you check-in. If your rental doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local shops and fuel stations. In addition to great local articles, travel guide magazines have coupons for local accommodations, restaurants and tours.
Use filters to search efficiently:
- Choose vacation week and maximum budget.
- Decide how many beds and what type of bedroom configuration you need. Ocean and sunrise views from Making Waves in Kill Devil Hills, NC! has 5 bedrooms and 6 bathrooms.
- Precise information about bedrooms and bed types is almost always available on booking websites. If not, contact the host before booking the home. Note that most property listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which oftentimes includes pull out couches in living rooms. You'll need to determine what configuration is right for your vacation group.
- If your group is bringing pets, filter your search for a pet-friendly property. Ask for details on breed, weight, and type requirements. Note that some property managers charge pet deposits and fees.
- Are you visiting for a specific event or attraction? If so, use a map search to locate nearby properties.
- Suitable accessibility can make or break a vacation for the less-mobile. Make certain to inquire about specialized equipment and wheel chair accessibility.
More tips for your visit:
- Review arrival and departure procedures before leaving home. Take a printed copy, and add a note with the directions to your smartphone.
- Hosts are there to help! Feel free to ask questions during your stay.
- Protect the property owner (and your things!) by keeping the rental locked up while you are gone, just like you would back home.
- Record any issues with the property upon arrival, and immediately send them to the owner. We especially recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that can be valuable if there is a dispute.
- Be respectful of your neighbors. Often, adjacent homes are occupied by local residents. Respecting quiet hours and parking regulations is the right thing to do.
- Don't forget to... Ask a local! Locals can frequently help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to go for the best drinks, have a great night out, or the best spots for fine dining?
- Don't leave anything behind! Just before departing, walk through the rental property to confirm you've collected all belongings. Remember to check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden belongings. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Go through the rental one final time and scan for any damage. We suggest walking through with the property manager whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the property manager isn't available, take photos and video of the rental to record its condition at check-out.
- Did your family have a excellent stay? Many vacation rental websites make it easy for vacationers to provide feedback. If your property and/or property manager was fantastic, they would love to hear it. If anything was out of order and they failed to fix it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make it a point as part of your review.
