How to get the best vacation home experience:
When to book & When to go:
- Reserve your vacation home as soon as possible. Rental schedules often open a year in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many groups reserve their Summer vacation rentals during Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years Eve get-togethers. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
- Summertime is the most expensive season in the Kill Devil Hills area. To get the best vacation home within budget, we highly recommend booking in the Fall or Spring. You'll enjoy lower rental rates, better selection, beautiful weather and the absence of giant crowds at restaurants, beaches, and activities. Many vacationers use this method to find larger homes within budget, or to book a beach front rental that would otherwise be unavailable during the Summer. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Kill Devil Hills vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation on the coast? Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years are great times to gather with friends and family at the beach.
- Some owners offer promotional rates for veterans and active duty military. Make sure to check with your property manager to see if special offers are available for your family.
- Management companies and individual rental owners usually offer their guests an option to buy vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which commonly will cost you anywhere between 1% - 5% of the base stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for days missed as a result of medical-related issues or weather, as well as hurricane evacuation charges, such as an unexpected hotel overnight or additional gas expenses. Trip insurance can be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your host for program terms and fees.
- Many property management companies supply Kill Devil Hills area travel guides that include money-saving offers, either offered independently by local companies, or by way of a relationship between the rental management company and the business itself. You can also find Kill Devil Hills visitors guide and coupon books at local shops and grocery stores.
Planning and choosing the right Kill Devil Hills rental home:
- First and foremost, have your group select the best dates and a budget.
- Determine how many bedrooms and the bed configuration your family needs. Welcoming beach house with an outdoor hot tub & fire pit - 1 Block to the beach has 4 bedrooms and 1 bathrooms.
- Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed types is generally available online. If you don't see them listed, email or call the property owner before you reserve your rental. Note that most properties list the maximum guest capacity, which often includes pull-out couches and bunk beds. You will need to establish what configuration is right for your vacation.
- If your family is traveling with pets, you'll need to search for a pet-friendly vacation rental. Request information on breed, size, and type restrictions. Be aware that some hosts require additional pet deposits and fees.
- Visiting for a single attraction? Try a map search to locate nearby properties.
- Proper accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for those with limited mobility. .
Advice for a wonderful stay:
- Review check in & check out procedures before leaving home. Take a printed copy, and save the directions to your smartphone.
- Ask questions. You may want instructions for a fireplace, elevator or coffee maker. Contact your property manager. They are there to help! A brief call prevents quite a few problems.
- Lock your vacation home while you are out. Protect the owner's property and your things!
- Document any damages to the property during check in, and immediately e-mail them to the host. We specifically recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that are beneficial if damages are assessed.
- Don't forget to respect your neighbors. Often times, adjacent homes are filled by local residents. Respecting quiet hours and parking regulations is the right thing to do.
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Neighbors can frequently point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to book the best tours, have a great night out, or the best spots for crabbing?
- Just prior to departing, take a walk-through to confirm you did not leave anything behind. Remember to check closets, dressers, garages, and bathrooms for hidden belongings. Clean the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Please make sure to walk through the property one final time and scan for damage. We recommend walking through with the property manager whenever you can. If the manager is not available, take photographs of the rental to record its condition at check-out.
- Remember to leave a review! Property owners rely on excellent reviews to compel new reservations. They'll be much obliged for your review. Alternatively, if something wasn't right, other vacationers will be thankful you shared your review and help them have the best future vacation. Please be objective. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the host could control the issue, and if so, whether they responded expeditiously to fix it.
