Booking during Hurricane Season (June 1st-Nov. 30th):
Booking a stay on our little sandbar during Hurricane season is always a little risky. These storms are unpredictable and can occur most often days or maybe a week before your stay. As listed, we have a strict cancellation policy which accepts for a full refund within the first 48 hours as long as the check-in date is at least 14 days away, a 50% refund for cancellations made at least 7 days before check-in, and no refunds for cancellations made within 7 days of check-in. If there were a mandatory evacuation while you were staying we would then give a full refund for the days that were affected by this action made by Dare County. If you choose to leave but no mandatory evacuation was issued you will not receive a refund. Some guests choose to purchase their own travel insurance policy through an independent company if they are nervous about this. Some of the most charming times of the year on the Outer Banks are during Hurricane season, but our policies are important for you to consider when booking.

Tricks and tips to get the very best rental home experience:
When to book & When to go:
- Book your vacation rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules generally open a year in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many groups book their Summer rentals during holiday gatherings. Book before these holidays for best selection.
- Summertime is the most expensive season in coastal NC. To find the largest rental within your budget, we recommend booking in the Fall or Spring shoulder seasons. You'll enjoy lower rental rates, greater selection, beautiful weather and the absence of giant crowds at Kill Devil Hills restaurants, beaches, and activities. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Kill Devil Hills vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday near the ocean? Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years are great times to gather with family and friends at your favorite beach.
- Veterans and Active Duty Military members may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property owner whether your vacationing group qualifies for a price reduction.
- Property managers often offer guests an option to buy vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which usually will cost you 1% - 5% of the base stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for days missed as a result of medical-related catastrophes or weather, as well as ensuing additional evacuation costs, such as an unanticipated hotel or additional fuel expenses. Trip insurance might be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your property manager for more information.
- Look for your local Kill Devil Hills visitors guide when you check-in. If your rental property doesn't have one, you can find them at local shops and fuel stations. In addition to great local information, visitor guides have coupons for local tours and attractions.
Filter your rental search:
- Choose a designated group leader, select your trip dates, and choose a spending budget.
- Decide how many bedrooms and the configuration your family needs. Slow Pace, OBX Cozy Beach Cottage, 2 min. walk to beach has 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms.
- Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed types is generally available on booking pages. Otherwise, contact the host before reserving the property. Remember that most listings specify maximum guest capacity, which oftentimes includes sofa beds.
- Traveling with pets? Although a number of vacation homes allow pets or animals, guidelines and costs vary per property. Allowable pet type, breed, and size are often limited. Ask your host before booking, and study your agreement thoroughly! Pet fees or could be applied to your contract.
- Are you looking for particular amenities? Most rental websites include search filters for amenities. Filtering by amenity will allow you to quickly find the best rental home.
- Proper accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for persons with disabilities. Remember to confirm all required amenities are available and included before reserving a rental
Considerations for your stay:
- Review arrival and departure procedures before leaving home. Add a note with the instructions to your smartphone, and take a printed backup.
- Property managers are there to help! Feel free to ask any questions before, during, or after your stay.
- Lock your rental while you are out and about. Protect the owner's property and your stuff!
- Note any issues with the rental at check in, and immediately e-mail them to the host. We specifically recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that are helpful if a dispute arises.
- Respect the neighborhood. Often times, adjacent homes are filled by local residents. Respecting noise limits and parking rules can make a stay significantly more pleasurable.
- Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Neighbors can typically help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to get the best breakfast in town, have a great night out, or the best spots for fishing?
- Re-check the rental property to make sure that you've packed everything at departure. Make sure to check bathrooms, dressers, and closets for hidden treasure. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Record a video to document the condition of the property.
- Did your group have a fantastic stay? Most rental management companies make it easy for clients to provide reviews. If your rental and/or host was great, they would love to hear about it. If anything was inoperable and they failed to address it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make a note as part of your feedback.
