Tricks and tips to get the optimal vacation home experience:
Finding your best deal:
- June, July, and August are the most expensive months in coastal NC. To find the best vacation home for your budget, we highly recommend booking in the Spring or Fall. You'll benefit from lower rental rates, better selection, gorgeous weather and the absence of giant crowds at popular Kill Devil Hills attractions and restaurants. Many vacationers use this method to find larger homes within budget, or to book a beach front vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during the high season. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Kill Devil Hills vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation on the coast? Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years are great times to gather with loved ones at the beach.
- Book your vacation home as early as possible. Rental schedules usually become available a year in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many families reserve their Summer vacations during Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years Eve gatherings. Book before these holidays for best selection.
- Veterans and Active Duty Military members may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property owner whether your vacationing group qualifies for a special rate.
- Management companies and individual rental owners frequently offer renters an option to buy trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which generally will cost you between 1% - 5% of the base reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed trip time as a result of medical-related emergencies or weather, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs, such as an unanticipated hotel stay or extra gas expenses. Trip insurance can be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for details.
- Often, property management companies and vacation rental houses supply Kill Devil Hills area visitors guides which include money-saving deals, either offered independently by local companies, or by way of a relationship with the property management company and the business itself. You can also find Kill Devil Hills area magazine and coupon books at local shops and grocery stores.
Planning and picking the right Kill Devil Hills vacation home:
- Select a group lead, select your trip dates, and select a max budget.
- Determine how many bedrooms and what type of bedroom configuration your family needs. Breakers 8 Ocean Front has 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
- Precise information about bedrooms and bed counts is almost always accessible on booking pages. If you don't see them listed, call the property management company before you reserve the vacation property. Note that most properties list maximum guest capacity, which usually includes sofa beds. You'll need to establish what bed configuration is right for your vacation.
- Is your group looking for special amenities? Most rental websites include search filters for amenities. Amenity filters help you quickly remove less-optimal properties.
- Appropriate accessibility can make or break a vacation for the less-mobile. Confirm all necessary amenities are available and included before booking.
- Some rentals allow pets, and others do not. Allowable types of dog or cat, size and breeds may be restricted, and additional charges may apply. Ask the host about pets before booking.
Some things to know before you go:
- Add the owner's phone number to your smartphone. Understand and take a copy of arrival/departure procedures.
- Make a record of any damages to the rental upon arrival, and immediately contact the owner. We specifically recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain time stamps that can be helpful if damages are assessed.
- Ask questions. You may want instructions for a garage door opener, intercom or washer/dryer. Contact your property manager. They are there to help! A brief telephone call can prevent a lot of concerns.
- Respecting quiet hours and parking policies can make a stay significantly more pleasurable. Be a good neighbor. You'll magnify your chance to make local friends, and resident neighbors are usually an incredible source for finding the best local beaches and hangouts.
- Don't forget to... Ask a local! Locals can frequently help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to take kids for a treat, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fishing?
- Protect the property owner (and your stuff!) by locking and securing the home while you are away, just like you would at home.
- Don't leave anything behind! Before departing, walk through the rental to make sure you've collected all of your things. Remember to check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden treasure. Clean out the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Record a video to document the condition of the property.
- Did your family have a great time? Most rental websites make it easy for customers to provide comments. If your rental property and/or property manager was great, they would love to hear it. If anything was amiss and they failed to correct it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make a note as part of your review.
