Getting the best vacation property experience:

Getting the most from your budget:

  • Book your vacation home as early as possible. Rental schedules often become available 12 months in advance (or in September just after Summertime ends). Many families book their Summer vacations during Christmas and Thanksgiving gatherings. Book before these holidays for best selection.
  • To find the most suitable rental home for your budget, we highly recommend booking in Fall or Spring months. You'll benefit from lower rates, greater selection, warm weather and the absence of large crowds at Kill Devil Hills restaurants, tours, and activities.
  • Property managers sometimes offer special rates for veterans and active duty military. Ask your host or property manager if discounts are available for your family.
  • Booking websites often offer customers an option to buy vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which normally costs between 1% - 5% of the booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any missed time as a result of medical-related emergencies or weather, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs, such as an unanticipated hotel stay or additional fuel expenses. Trip insurance might be a a life-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your property manager for specifics.
  • Find a copy of your local Kill Devil Hills area magazine upon checking in. If your rental doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local grocery stores and visitor centers. In addition to great information, visitor guide magazines have discounts for local accommodations, restaurants and tours.

Narrow your Search:

  • Begin by selecting a vacation week and a max budget.
  • Note the number bedrooms and the bed configuration your group needs. Luxurious 4 BR Family Retreat with Pool has 4 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms.
  • Specific information regarding bedrooms and bed counts & types is often available online. If you don't see them listed, reach out to the host before booking the vacation property. Note that most property listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which often includes sofa beds and bunks.
  • Are you traveling with furry, four-legged family members? Many vacation homes allow animals, but guidelines and restrictions apply. Allowable pet type, breed, and size are often limited. Remember to ask the property manager before booking, and study your rental agreement! Additional fees or charges applied to your agreement.
  • Looking for particular amenities? Most websites include search filters with amenity lists. Amenity filters help you quickly remove less-optimal properties.
  • Proper accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for guests with disabilities. Confirm all necessary amenities are available before reserving a rental.

Additional considerations:

  • Be sure you get the property manager's phone number and entry/exit procedures for your . We recommend storing the manager's contact information in your smartphone and wallet.
  • Property managers are available to help! Don't be shy to ask any questions before, during, or after your stay.
  • Protect the owner (and your stuff!) by keeping the rental locked up when you are gone, just like you would at home.
  • During check-in, note any issues with the rental property and immediately alert the host. Record all correspondence just in case a dispute arises.
  • Respecting quiet hours and parking regulations can make a stay more pleasurable. You will increase your chance to make some new local friends, and resident neighbors are a fantastic resource to find the best local spots.
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local! Neighbors can frequently help. Who better to ask where to launch your kayaks, have a great night out, or the best spots for bird watching?
  • On check-out day, take a walk-through to make sure you have not leave anything behind. Re-check closets, dressers, garages, and bathrooms for hidden treasure. Clean the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Inspect the property one final time and look for damage. We recommend inspecting the property with the property manager whenever you can. If the property manager isn't available, remember to take video and pictures of the property to record its condition.
  • Did you have a wonderful stay? Most rental home management companies make it easy for clients to provide comments. If your rental and/or host was fantastic, they will likely appreciate your kind words. If anything was imperfect and they failed to correct it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make a note as part of your feedback.
