Strategies to get the perfect rental experience:
Find your perfect rental:
- Reserve your vacation home as early as possible. Rental schedules generally open a year in advance (or in September just after Summertime ends). Many families reserve their Summer vacations during Christmas and Thanksgiving gatherings. Book before these holidays for best selection.
- To find the best value, consider shifting your family's Kill Devil Hills vacation week to the Spring or Fall shoulder seasons. May, September, and even October offer warmer weather, fewer crowds, and reduced traffic.
- Veterans and Active Duty Military members may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property manager if your group qualifies for a price reduction or discount.
- Property management companies often offer customers an option to buy trip insurance. Trip insurance, which will generally cost between 1% - 5% of the reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed days as a result of medical-related catastrophes or weather disasters, as well as hurricane evacuation charges, such as an unexpected hotel overnight or additional gas expenses. Trip insurance can be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask your host for program terms and fees.
- Many property management companies and vacation rental houses supply Kill Devil Hills area visitor guide magazines which will include special offers, either offered independently by local businesses, or by way of a relationship with the management company and the business itself. You can also find Kill Devil Hills visitors guide and coupon books at local shops and grocery stores.
Narrow your Search:
- First, have your family decide on a vacation week and a maximum budget.
- Decide how many beds and what type of bedroom configuration your family requires. Saline Solution - Cozy Cottage 3 blocks from ocean has 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
- Precise information about bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is generally available on booking pages. If they are not listed, contact the property owner before booking the property. Note that most property listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which usually includes sofa beds and bunks.
- Do your family pets travel with you? Many vacation homes allow animals, but guidelines and restrictions apply. Type of pet, size and breeds may be limited. Remember to ask the property manager before booking, and study your rental agreement! Additional pet fees or costs could be applied to your agreement.
- Does your group require unique amenities? Most websites include search filters for amenities.
- Appropriate accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for the less-mobile. .
Some things to know before you go:
- Add the owner's contact information to your phone. Print and take a copy of arrival/departure procedures.
- Hosts are available to help! Feel free to ask any questions before, during, or after your stay.
- Ensure you protect the rental owner (and your things!) by locking the property when you are gone, just like you would back home.
- Note any issues with the property upon arrival, and immediately contact the property manager. We especially recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that are very helpful if damages are attributed to your stay.
- Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like disagreeable visitors bothering your peaceful neighborhood. Practice the golden rule for best judgement. If they like you, locals might even recommend great restaurants and places you would've never otherwise known!
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Residents can usually help. Who better to ask where to book the best tours, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fishing?
- Don't leave anything behind! Before departing, walk through the property to reconfirm you've collected all belongings. Re-check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden items. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Document the condition of the property at check-out. We recommend taking a video during your final walk-through.
- Remember to leave a review! Property owners rely on great feedback to inspire future reservations. They'll be grateful for your feedback. Alternatively, if something wasn't as described, other families will be thankful you shared your feedback find their best vacation rental. Please be fair with your feedback If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the property manager had any control over the issue, and if so, whether they responded reasonably to fix it.
