Rental property booking tips and tricks:
Getting the best rental home value:
- To find the largest vacation home within your budget, we highly recommend reserving in Spring or Fall. You'll enjoy lower rental rates, better selection, warm weather and the absence of large crowds at restaurants, beaches, and activities. Many vacationers use this strategy to reserve larger homes, or to book an oceanfront vacation rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during the Summer.
- In the Kill Devil Hills area, The sooner your group can reserve a home, the easier your search will be. The best rental homes are reserved early. Booking your rental six to twelve months before your travel dates is recommended. Winter holidays are excellent times to search for and book your rental home.
- Veterans and Active Duty Military members may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property manager if your group qualifies for a price reduction or discount.
- Booking websites often offer guests an option to purchase trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which normally will cost you between 1% - 5% of the stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed time as a result of personal medical-related emergencies or weather, as well as evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel overnight or additional gasoline expenses. Trip insurance might be a a life-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your host for program terms and fees.
- Often, rental management companies supply Kill Devil Hills area visitor guides which will include money-saving offers, either offered directly by local companies, or through a relationship with the rental management company and the business itself. You can also find visitors guide and coupon books at local gas stations and shopping centers.
Filter your rental search:
- Begin by selecting your trip dates and a spending budget.
- Determine how many bedrooms and what type of bedroom configuration your group requires. Elevated home near the beach with deck, central AC & washer/dryer - dog-friendly has 3 bedrooms and 1 bathrooms.
- Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts & types is normally available on booking websites. Otherwise, call the property manager before booking your home. Note that most property listings specify maximum guest capacity, which usually includes pull out couches in living rooms. You'll need to establish what is optimal for your vacation.
- Are you visiting for a specific event or attraction? Use a map search to locate nearby properties.
- Appropriate accessibility can make or break a vacation for persons with a disability. Remember to confirm all required amenities are available before reserving a rental
- Are you traveling with furry, four-legged family members? Many vacation homes allow animals, but guidelines and restrictions apply. Type of pet, size and breeds may be limited. Make sure to ask before booking, and study your rental agreement! Extra fees or charges might be applied to your agreement.
During your stay:
- Take a copy of the property manager's phone number and arrival/departure procedures for your rental.
- At Check-in, note any damages to the rental property and immediately alert the owner. Keep records of all correspondence in case a dispute arises.
- Hosts are great sources of help! Don't be shy to ask questions before, during, or after your stay.
- Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like loud vacationers bothering your peace. Use the golden rule for best judgement. Happy residents may even recommend great local food and scenic spots you would've not otherwise known!
- Don't forget to... Ask a local! Residents can usually help. Who better to ask where to launch your kayaks, have a great night out, or the best spots for BBQ?
- Lock your vacation home while you're out and about. Protect the owner's property and your things!
- Don't leave anything behind! Just before departing, take a walk through the rental to reconfirm you've collected all personal items. Make sure to check closets, dressers, garages, and bathrooms for hidden items. Clean the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Please make sure to walk through the rental a final time and look for damages to contents or the property itself. We suggest walking through with the property manager whenever possible. If the property manager is not available, take photographs of the property to record its condition at check-out.
- Leave a review! Property owners rely on excellent reviews to inspire more reservations. They'll be thankful for your review. Alternatively, if something wasn't as described, other families will appreciate that you share your experience and help them have the best future vacation. Please be objective. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the host had any control over the issue, and if so, whether they responded reasonably to fix it.
