Tips and Tricks for getting the perfect vacation property experience:

Find your perfect rental home:

  • Summer is high season in the Kill Devil Hills area. To find the best value, try shifting your family's Kill Devil Hills vacation dates to the Spring or Fall shoulder seasons. May, September, and October offer great weather, less crowded beaches, and reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this method to reserve larger homes, or to reserve a beach front rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during June, July, and August. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Kill Devil Hills vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation near the ocean? Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years are great times to gather with family and friends at your favorite beach.
  • The earlier you can book a rental home, the better your selection will be. The most desirable rental homes are booked very early. Reserving your vacation rental up to 12 months before your vacation dates is recommended. Holidays such as Christmas and Thanksgiving are excellent times to search for and book your rental property.
  • Some property managers offer promotional rates for active duty military and veterans. Ask your host or property manager if special offers are available for your family before you book.
  • Property management companies typically offer guests an option to obtain vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which normally costs 1% - 5% of the reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any days missed as a result of personal medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as hurricane evacuation costs, such as an unanticipated hotel overnight or additional gas expenses. Trip insurance can be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask your host for specifics.
  • Often, management companies and vacation rental houses supply Kill Devil Hills area visitor guide magazines which often include coupons, either offered independently by local companies, or through a relationship between the rental management company and the business itself. You can also find Kill Devil Hills visitors guide magazine and coupon books at local gas stations and shopping centers.

How to pick the best vacation rental in Kill Devil Hills:

  • Select a group leader, choose your vacation dates, and select a max budget.
  • Pool Access
  • Precise information about bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is generally available online. If they are not listed, contact the host before you reserve your rental. Note that most listings specify the max. guest capacity, which typically includes pull out couches in living rooms. You'll need to work out what configuration is right for your vacation.
  • Does your group require particular amenities? Most rental search websites include search filters for amenities. Filtering by amenity will allow you to quickly find your ideal rental home.
  • Appropriate accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for persons with a disability. Remember to confirm all necessary amenities are available before reserving a rental
  • If your family is vacationing with pets, you'll need to search for a rental that allows animals. Ask for details on breed, weight, and type requirements. Often, hosts require additional pet deposits and fees.

Know before you go:

  • Take a copy of the owner's phone number and entry/exit procedures for your . We recommend storing the manager's contact information in your smartphone and wallet.
  • Make a record of any issues with the rental at check in, and immediately contact the host. We specifically recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that can be helpful if there is a dispute.
  • Ask questions. You may need instructions for a garage door opener, A/V setup or kitchen appliance. Contact your owner. They are there to help! A brief phone call can prevent quite a few concerns.
  • Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like loud visitors bothering your quiet neighborhood. Employ the golden rule for common sense. If they like you, locals might even recommend great local food and scenic spots you would have not otherwise known!
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Locals can typically help. Who better to ask where to go for the best drinks, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fine dining?
  • Lock your rental while you are out and about. Protect the owner's property and your things!
  • Just before checking out, complete a walk-through to confirm you haven't leave anything behind. Make sure to check bathrooms, dressers, and closets for hidden items. Clean the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Inspect the rental a final time and keep an eye out for any damage. We suggest walking through with the host whenever possible. If the property manager isn't available, take photos of the property to record its condition at check-out.
  • Remember to leave feedback! Property owners rely on excellent reviews to inspire future reservations. They'll be thankful for your review. Alternatively, if something went awry, other vacationing families will appreciate that you share your experience find their best vacation rental. Please be fair with your feedback If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the manager had any control over the issue, and if so, whether they responded reasonably to fix it.
