Tricks and tips to get the perfect rental home experience:
How to get the best value:
- To find the best value, consider shifting your family's Kill Devil Hills vacation week to the Spring or Fall shoulder seasons. May, September, and even October offer excellent weather, , and reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this strategy to find larger homes within budget, or to reserve an oceanfront vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable during June, July, and August.
- Book your vacation home as early as possible. Rental schedules generally become available a year in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many families book their Summer vacation rentals during Winter holiday get-togethers. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
- Hosts sometimes offer discounts for veterans and active duty military. Ask your host or property manager if special discounts are available for your family.
- Booking websites usually offer customers an option to obtain vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which will generally cost 1% - 5% of the base reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for days missed as a result of medical-related issues or weather, as well as ensuing additional evacuation costs or charges, such as an unanticipated hotel or extra gasoline expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a bank account-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your host for details.
- Look for your local Kill Devil Hills visitors guide when you check-in. If your rental home doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local shops and fuel stations. In addition to great local stories, travel guide magazines contain money saving offers on nearby tours, shops, and attractions.
How to select the perfect vacation rental in Kill Devil Hills:
- Start by choosing your the best vacation week and a maximum budget.
- Determine how many beds and what type of bedroom configuration your family needs. Work Trip: 500ft. to the Beach
- Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts is regularly available on booking websites. If not, email or call the host before you reserve the vacation home. Remember that most listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which oftentimes includes pull-out couches and bunk beds.
- Are you looking for specific amenities? Most rental search websites include amenity lists and search filters.
- Suitable accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for guests that require the use of a wheelchair. Confirm all required amenities are available and included before booking.
- Some rentals allow pets, but some don't. Allowable types of pet, size and breeds may be restricted, and additional fees may apply. Ask the owner about your furry family members before booking.
Have a great stay:
- Review arrival and departure procedures before leaving home. Add a note with the directions to your phone, and take a printed backup.
- Make a record of any damages to the property upon arrival, and immediately e-mail them to the property manager. We especially recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that are very helpful if damages are attributed to your stay.
- Hosts are great sources of help! Don't be shy to ask any questions before, during, or after your stay.
- Respecting quiet hours and parking rules can make a stay significantly more pleasurable. Be a good neighbor. You will magnify your chance to make local friends, and resident neighbors are often a great resource to find the best local beaches.
- Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Neighbors can usually point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to order the best nachos, have a great night out, or the best spots for bird watching?
- Lock your rental property while you're gone! Don't let burglars ruin your trip.
- Just before checking out, complete a walk-through to make sure you have not forget anything. Check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden treasure. Clean the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Go through the property a final time and scan for damage. We advise walking through with the property manager whenever possible. If the property manager isn't available, remember to take pictures of the property to record its condition at check-out.
- After your trip, leave a review! Property owners rely on good ratings to compel future bookings. They'll be thankful for your feedback. Alternatively, if something went awry, other vacationing families will be thankful you shared your experience find their best vacation rental. Please be objective. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the manager had any control over the issue, and if so, whether they responded quickly to remedy it.
